Competence can vary from one situation to another. Self-esteem is the regard or respect that a person has for oneself. The findings show a negative relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem (p= 0.000); students with high self-efficacy were more likely to have low self-esteem while those with low to moderate self-efficacy were more likely to have high to moderate self-esteem than those with low self-efficacy. The verbal and nonverbal feedback we get from people affect our feelings of self- efficacy and our self-esteem. As we saw in Pedro’s example, being given positive feedback can increase our self-efficacy, which may make us more likely to engage in a similar task in the future.
Efficacy is more spontaneous in nature while esteem is permanent in nature. Self-efficacy and self-esteem are two terms, often mistaken for one another, that are closely connected. When self-efficacy is high, self-esteem tends to be high as well, and likewise when self-efficacy is low, self-esteem tends to be low too.
